Mission Statement   

The mission of the Accounting & Business Association Shady Grove Chapter (ABA Shady Grove) is to provide opportunities for personal, academic and professional development for students interested in the accounting profession, through regular meetings, professional speakers, community service and social activities. The organization functions under the auspices and with the guidance of the Accounting Department of the Robert H. Smith School of Business.

Membership Requirements

Membership is open to all accounting and business majors, and others interested in the accounting profession. A minimum GPA of 2.5 must be maintained for membership. In addition, it is expected that members participate in at least 75% of all sponsored activities. ABA does not discriminate on the basis of age, color, disability, national origin, political affiliation, race, religion or gender in the administration of membership or other programs.

ARTICLE I - NAME

The name of the organization shall be the Accounting and Business Association (ABA) of the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland-Shady Grove.

ARTICLE II - PURPOSE

The purpose of the organization is to provide opportunities for personal, academic and professional development for students interested in the accounting profession, through regular meetings, professional speakers, community service and social activities. The organization functions under the auspices and with the guidance of the Accounting Department of the Robert H. Smith School of Business.

ARTICLE III - MEMBERSHIP

ARTICLE IV - EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Section 1: Officers

The executive committee shall be comprised of the following officers: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Webmaster, Marketing Director, Secretary, and SUSA Representative .

Section 2: Duties

2.1 President

The duties of the President are to oversee the organization's function in accordance with its mission; to conduct meetings; represent the organization at Dean's Undergraduate Advisory Council meetings; to collaborate with the other executive committee officers to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of their roles; to act as liaison with the Accounting Department.

2.2 Vice President

The duties of the Vice President are to assist in all organization duties and fulfill the Presidents duties when not present.

2.3 Treasurer

The duties of the Treasurer are to keep detailed a record and budget of the organization's funds and financial activities; to provide a detailed annual report; and to coordinate fundraising events.

2.4 Webmaster

The duties of the Webmaster are to organize and coordinate professional and social events for members and interested outside parties on the worldwide web; and to maintain all social and professional websites related therein.

2.5 Marketing Director

The duties of the Marketing Director are to plan, coordinate and direct the recruitment new members; to promote the organization and its activities; and to relate pertinent information of upcoming events to the general membership and other interested parties.

2.6 Secretary

The duties of the Secretary are to keep minutes and attendance at meetings; maintain membership records; to be a contact person for members; and to relate pertinent information regarding the organization's activities to the general membership.

2.7 SUSA Representative

The duties of the SUSA Representative are to represent the Shady Grove chapter of the Accounting Business Association during required SUSA Assembly meetings; to be a contact person for College Park location; and to relay information regarding organizational changes

Section 3: Elections

3.1. Eligibility for Office and Voting

In order to run for an executive committee office, it is required that members participate in at least 50% of the current semester’s meetings. Voting members must attend at least one meeting prior to the election. Attendance will be judged by sign-in sheets only, and candidates must be pre-approved by the current executive committee.

 

3.2. Election Meeting

Elections will be held on special meeting dates where the candidates will have an opportunity to address the membership. Election to office will be decided by majority vote using pre-printed ballots. If a tie occurs, there will be an automatic re-election. If there is a tie in the reelection for the position of President, current officers will vote to break the tie. This is the only time current officers will be eligible to vote. Any subsequent recount ties will be broken by the president-elect.

Section 4: Term of Office/Removal from Office

The term of an office is one year, effective January 1 until December 31. An officer may serve no more than two terms on the executive committee. The removal from office is at the discretion of the Accounting Department, Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Programs of the Smith School of Business and the Faculty Advisor.

ARTICLE V - FINANCES/ALLOCATION OF FUNDS

Activities requiring funds will be financed through fundraising events, as well as money supplied by the university. The Treasurer will be responsible for maintaining a detailed record of the organization's financial activities, as well as the annual and semester budget.

ARTICLE VI - DISTRIBUTION OF ASSETS ON DISSOLUTION

At such time that the Accounting and Business Association shall be dissolved, its assets shall revert to a scholarship fund to be determined by the active members of the chapter at the time of of dissolution.
